Weekend Riff: From A Loss for Words to NEEDTOBREATHE, 5 Hot Shows This Weekend
From folk to pop-punk, every night this weekend offer a reason to get out!
-Friday: Michigan songwriter Drew Nelson stops by the Ten Pound Fiddle Friday, bringing his spirited folk-rock. Nelson just released his Red House Records debut, “Tilt-A-Whirl,” so expect to hear plenty of newbie songs in his set. Several Michigan musicians appear on the album, including Jen Sygit (vocals), Michael Crittenden (B-3 organ, Wurlitzer, piano, guitars) and Mark R. Schrock (bass, mandolin, vocals), to name a few. Read more in this week's What's On.
-Friday: Boston pop-punk band A Loss for Words (above) reaches the Loft Friday, and dare I say, the band reminds me of my all-time favorite group, AFI. Just a bit. A ton of pop-rock types also play the show, including the Menzingers, Make Do and Mend, Code Orange Kids, Captain We’re Sinking, the Sheds, Hometeam, Priorities and Yours Truly. Find more information on the Fusion Shows website.
-Saturday: When you think of a great big pile of leaves, fall comes to mind. But, it's spring. Or, at least it feels like it! So, we're talking about the band, A Great Big Pile of Leaves, hitting Mac's in Lansing Saturday for a show. Mansions, Young Statues, Benthos and Vinacious open. Find more information via Fusion Shows.
-Sunday: The Old Town Stomp gets festival season off to a start with a party and the 2-5-1 Community Turnaround Awards, saluting those who make free community events like Lansing JazzFest, Old Town BluesFest and Michigan Mosaic Music Festival possible. “Our sponsors and volunteers have been the reason the festivals have been able to grow as they have. We’re glad to have the opportunity to let them know how much we appreciate their support,” said Mike Skory, board member.
Performers include the Jeff Shoup Trio, Brenda Loomis and the Alligators. I'm very honored to be acceping the Community Service Award at this year's show! See you there!
-Plan on it: Christian alt-rocker NEEDTOBREATHE hits the Intersection in Grand Rapids Monday, bringing new tracks off their album "The Reckoning" for an all ages show. Find more information via the Intersection's site.
