I am on a girl power high!
I just returned from the 2008 Kaleidoscope day for women put on by the MSU Alumni Association and I'm not kidding I am on the biggest girl power high right now, I want to go write a book or recycle or something (but instead I'll just blog)
The day started with an amazing talk from Miss America! Although my girl Laura is obsessed with Miss America, 1. because she grew up watching it and 2. this year's Miss America is a member of her church in Farmington Hills, I had never been too much into the competition or caring who won. This year I watched the show with Laura and we were so excited when Miss Michigan Kirsten Haglund won!
Well today I was even more excited to say that Kirsten is from our home state. At only 19-years-old she is one of the most well spoken women I have ever seen speak.
She spoke right from the heart about her eating disorder as young teenager, why she entered Miss American in the first place and just exactly what Miss America means today. She was adorable and so fun to listen to.
She was also kind enough to share her crown with Sarah Skilling of the MSU Alumni Association, who put together most of the day's events and keynote speaker Carson Kressley.
Speaking of Carson he was also an amazing speaker. So energized and funny. And I have to say one of the highlights of his talk was when he said that the name Kaleidoscope was just so gay he had to be a part of it lol.
I also loved that he pointed out that Michigan is the only state shaped like a fashion accessory.
He gave 10 tips to find your own style and then took lots of questions from some of the 888 women who attended the sold out event.
Between Kirsten and Carson there were break out sessions. One of the sessions I attended was with Linda Hundt, owner of Sweetie-licious Pie Pantry in DeWitt.
Not only can she bake the best pie ever (except for my mom's) she is an inspirational woman who's determined attitude got her her own shop, first place in a Food Network challenge and she hopes a spot on the Oprah show telling some of the stories she encountered at her shop. Linda is alla bout loving people and making memories and of course making delicious goodies.
Also between speakers was the big makeover reveal of Laura and Laura who were selected to win makeovers from Macy's and GLW. Since I wrote the makeover stories and helped with the behind the scenes video I was so happy to see these women get their day on stage. They both looked beautiful and it was a friendly reminder that once and a while we women have to treat ourself to a new look and a new outfit to give us a little boost in our self confidence.
Anyway, the day was great. I look forward to next year's event.
Did you attend? What did you think of the day?

You have to be kidding me. Girl power? Talk about fashion, style, winning a Miss America pageant? Can I puke?
Equal pay for equal work. Family leave. Glass ceilings. Medical research equity. These are the topics that REAL woman care about. I could care less about "finding my own style" or getting on "Oprah."
You make every woman look like an idiot, you pathetic, whining moron.
