"Stuff Happens"

The Iraq war is depressing. The path that lead the U.S. to invade Iraq is depressing. Sept. 11, 2001 is depressing, the fact that our current President didn't win the popular vote in 2000, yet was our President is depressing.
So it might seem strange that almost 90 people were gathered on a Friday night to watch a play about those events.
But I choose to see it differently. It's good that instead of ignoring what has happened to our country since 2001, people are interested to hear about it and watch one playwrights interpretations about those events.
That playwright is David Hare, the play is "Stuff Happens," a political drama about the events leading up to the U.S. invasion of Iraq.
Peppermint Creek Theatre Company is producing the play now through May 3 at Perspective2 in Lansing' s Old Town.

I am on a girl power high!

I just returned from the 2008 Kaleidoscope day for women put on by the MSU Alumni Association and I'm not kidding I am on the biggest girl power high right now, I want to go write a book or recycle or something (but instead I'll just blog)

The day started with an amazing talk from Miss America! Although my girl Laura is obsessed with Miss America, 1. because she grew up watching it and 2. this year's Miss America is a member of her church in Farmington Hills, I had never been too much into the competition or caring who won. This year I watched the show with Laura and we were so excited when Miss Michigan Kirsten Haglund won!
Well today I was even more excited to say that Kirsten is from our home state. At only 19-years-old she is one of the most well spoken women I have ever seen speak.

Looking for moms

NOISE is looking for moms in the Greater Lansing Area between the ages of 20 and 35 for an upcoming story in our Mother's Day issue out May 7.

We want to know how many kids you have, how you decided to have kids, how your life has changed since having kids, how you handle the everyday work of having kids and any advice you can offer future moms.

We are looking for both working and stay at home moms. Give us a call if you're interested so we can set up an interview and a photo!

Thanks so much, can't wait to hear from you!

More green info.

Got this e-mail today and thought I'd share it in time for Earth Day

Stop by a Verizon Wireless Communications store and give your old wireless phones to the company’s HopeLine® phone recycling program. The phones will be disposed of properly or refurbished for resale and reuse, with proceeds going to victims of domestic violence. Wireless customers can drop off their old wireless phones and accessories at the following locations:

"Avenue Q"

AvenueqI never in a million years thought I'd see a puppet do it. (yeah, that it) but then last night at the opening production of "Avenue Q" at The Wharton Center on MSU's campus now through April 20, I saw just that.

Not only were puppets doing it on stage, they were swearing, drinking, coming out of the closet and more. All while teaching valuable life lessons to the audience of course.

Maybe I can eat more carbs...

I am not sure how many of you reading this are having to take a different route around downtown Lansing because of the construction on Grand Avenue, but if you do than you'll understand my pain.

Not only do LSJ staffers have to take a different driving way to our parking lot we now have to walk an extra block (around the big old hole in the middle of Grand) to get to our building.

Now yesterday and today and hopefully the rest of the week, this won't be a big deal b/c the weather is nice but I can just imagine how happy we'll all be the first time it rains in this set up...uggg

On the plus side, I'm guessing adding extra blocks to my entrance and exit from work (which on some days takes place many, many times) means I can add extra carbs to my diet. I can always find a bright side :)

In the meantime good luck to those changing their daily routine b/c of the construction and feel free to share what your change has been on here.

Daytona Beach '08

PalmsLast week Matt and I took a little spring vacay (we are officially too old to call it spring break) to Daytona Beach, Fla.

We had a great time!!  The weather was sunny and warm (high 80s near the end) Pool Waves

Beach We rented a 'studio apartment' which was actually a converted hotel room but the price couldn't have been better. It was on the water with an ocean view and a tiki bar downstairs..and really what else do you need on vacay?

Warm weather ahead

Finally - after what seemed like winter would never leave us, it looks like it could be a beautiful week this week. Temps are supposed to be in the 60s by tomorrow and it may stay sunny until at least Thursday.
My first task is going to be trying to dig out the area along my house that we still have left to landscape - I'm determined to get it done before the baby arrives (less than seven weeks now!). I just want it finished so that we can enjoy the summer with our new arrival and now have to worry about any other projects.

What's strange about you?

So I was taking a MySpace quiz today (I know, I am so mature...come to think of it, maybe that's what strange about me) but anyway I was taking this quiz and one of the questions was "What's the strangest thing about you?"

And I really couldn't think of much. I mean I think of myself as the average, Midwest, girl next door. I think you kind of get what you see. Besides a bad temper and a slight case of OCD (I like a clean house) I think I'm pretty average.

Bingo at 505...what have you won?

Club 505, 505 E. Shiawassee St., Lansing hosts a free Bingo game every Thursday night.

I went to my first game more than a year ago and had a blast! Along with $4 pitchers, 505 serves up a selection of bar food and some really fun rounds of bingo.
The problem is that on my first trip I won! (okay, so it's not that big of a problem but...)
505 has a random selection of prizes that vary week to week from candles to toilet paper to power drills to MSU t-shirts and more.
I won a set of tool boxes on my first try but since then I've had no luck at all!
