On any given night, Lansing’s music scene follows its own eclectic sound — from metal rock at Mac’s
Bar to folk at Magdalena’s Tea House. Maia Hausler explored the local scene recently and took a variety of photographs. See what she found by clicking here.

The next big boy band may not be boys at all. Lip-syncing to the
likes of New Kids on the Block, N’Sync and George Michael, Drag King
Rebellion is a gender-bending performance troupe out to challenge
societal norms of gender boundaries. Based in East Lansing, DKR’s seven
members are trans-male, meaning women who identify as men, genderqueer,
meaning people whose gender identity fluctuates, and bio-queens, or
women who identify as women. In a November show at Club 505 in Lansing,
the group performed for a packed house. As they raced to change outfits
between songs, T.J. Jourian, who performs as Trik Jemini, took the
stage to talk about gender identity. But DKR isn’t all about politics.
“We do a lot of booty-shaking,” said Arielle Popkey, who performs as
A-Train.
