Lansing Music Scene

  • Macs10
On any given night, Lansing’s music scene follows its own eclectic sound — from metal rock at Mac’s Bar to folk at Magdalena’s Tea House. Maia Hausler explored the local scene recently and took a variety of photographs.

A bird in hand

Bird
I found this cute baby bird in my street the other day. According to the internet it's a fledgling, almost ready to fly, but not quite. I put it in a box and made a diorama for it out of leaves and twigs. We spent some quality time watching television together. Then in the morning, I put it back outside under a bush near where I think its nest is. It wan't there later in the day, so either it's been happily reunited with friends and family, or it's cat food.

April showers bring...

Wildflower

April showers have brought out the wildflowers at Scott Woods in Lansing, where the forest is carpeted in purple, white, pink and yellow blossoms. And you know what May flowers bring? Pilgrims, of course.

First signs Spring has sprung

Crocus
Crocus1

Like lots of folks around Lansing, I spent part of the weekend clearing gardens around my house so Spring flowers could have room to bloom. Like these crocuses in a neighbor's yard.

Butterfly
More than 200 new butterflies are hatching in the chrysalis box each week at the  4H Children's Garden Butterfly House. Which is a good thing because I spent an hour stalking this lone Julia butterfly when the garden opened to the public Monday. New butterflies will be hatching through the end of April.

Has anyone else noticed that skies are relatively clear around Lansing lately? It's great to see the sun again. And the sunsets...

I spent a day at the beach with friends at Point Betsie this weekend. Perfect weather, warm water, and good friends -- there's nothing better. A little too much sun though, I still look and feel like a boiled lobster today.

The latest exhibit at the Potter Park Zoo, a baby snow leopard, was born May 4. Native to the mountain ranges of central and southern Asia, the snow leopard is an endangered species. Potter Park's summer hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Turtle

Don't tread on the Trillium

Trillium1
Trillium2
Trillium is one of the first spring flowers. At Rose Lake in Haslett the blooms are quickly dying off as summer approaches. The plant has three large leaves and a three-petaled flower, hence the tri in Trillium. FYI: it's illegal to pick trillium flowers in Michigan because doing so seriously damages the plant.
