Détente, Old Movies and Church Linen
July 15, 2007 LuLu LuLu our cat had a great week. We had a visit from our daughter and her dog Hershy. Although, LuLu usually enjoys terrorizing Hershy (who is three times her size) they had a détente and got along fine-except for LuLu trying to eat Hershy’s food. Taking Care of yourself We had some dinner parties lately and I have been trying new recipes. I like the Cooking Light magazine. I get most of my recipes from that magazine. The June and July issues had a lot of vegetable salad recipes that we liked. I also made some lettuce wraps from the magazine. I have learned that fresh ingredients are so important in these dishes. Exploring We watched The Tin Man (1934 move with William Powel). Great mystery also the fashion, car interiors, decoration, etc were fun to watch. Even the bad guys wore suits and fedoras. However the amount of drinking as well as smoking was kind of amazing and shows the changes in our culture, as to what is permissible behavior. I am also catching up on my reading. My daughter gave me The New Yorker for my birthday and I love that. I also get the Jim Hightower Letter (only liberals can love it). I am trying to finish reading The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I started it over a year ago but am having trouble staying with it. The story is dark and disturbing. I take great pleasure in getting the Sunday New York Times and perverse delight in the wedding announcements. These announcements go into great detail about the pedigree of the family. Sometimes the announcements list grandparents and great-grandparents especially if they were Presidents. This week there was one for a wedding in Grand Ledge. Giving Back This month, I have altar guild duties at my church including the washing and pressing of the church linen. I am not known for my ironing ability, but I do take pride in doing the linens. There is something about the neat piles of white perfectly folded linen that gives me satisfaction. Preparing the altar for the service is like setting a beautiful table.
